Universal Pictures released a new trailer for Wicked, its most-awaited fantasy adventure. The film stars pop singers and actors Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the lead roles. Directed by Jon M. Chu and produced by March Platt, Wicked is the prequel to the Wizard of Oz which narrates the untold stories of the two witches, Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda (Grande) who were once best friends. They find them trapped in the world of Oz as they discover their distinct personalities. 

What Is ‘Wicked’ About?

‘Wicked’ is based on Gregory Maguire’s book ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’, which was later made into a Broadway musical called ‘Wicked’.

The fantastic adventure of ‘Wicked’ chronicles the tale of two powerful witches, Elphaba and Glinda. They meet at Shiz University in the Land of Oz and unexpectedly become housemates. Elphaba is frequently underestimated because of her green appearance, but Glinda is affected by fame and popularity. They form a deep bond as they eventually figure out their personalities. However, their sacred relationship is tested when they meet The Wizard of Oz and realize what they really are. This extraordinary tale of friendship will unveil the hidden secret as to how the witches came to be known as the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Who All Are in the Cast?

The magical adventure of ‘Wicked’ comes with an impeccable cast. The fans are overwhelmed to see Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the lead roles playing the protagonist and the antagonist in the upcoming film.  

Grande plays the good witch, Glinda while Erivo portrays the role of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Bridgerton actor Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, the main love interest in the story. 

Michelle Yeoh plays Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum will be seen as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The others include Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp also known as the Wicked Witch of the East, Peter Dinklage as the voice of Doctor Dillamond, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, and Adam James as Glinda’s father.

How Did the Fans React?

Fans are over the moon ever since the full official trailer of the ‘Wicked’ has been out. They are praising the trailer and are looking forward to watching it in theatres. One of the fans wrote, “Wicked is my favorite musical, I’m not even gonna pretend to have a critical thinking about this movie, I just wanted it to exist so much. But I’m sure Ariana and Cynthia did an amazing job. Not an Ari stan, but I’m sure she waited her whole life for this.” Another said, “The fact that Wicked is basically a fanfiction of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is what I adore most about it.” The third wrote, “I GOT CHILLS JUST WATCHING THIS!!! This movie is gonna be one of the greatest musical to film adaptations ever. Congrats to the cast and crew y’all did amazing!”

Will It Get an OTT Release?

The Part One of the ‘Wicked’ will release in theatres on November 28, 2024 whereas the Part Two will be releasing on November 28, 2025. Speaking of the OTT, the makers have not revealed yet when and where the film will be available to stream. 

What To Expect?

Jon M. Chu is a director best known for films such as Step Up Franchise and Crazy Rich Asians. Since both of these films did exceptionally well at the box office, fans have high expectations for his next movie. A soundtrack that gives you goosebumps combined with cutting-edge visual effects, this film is definitely a treat for the fans. Ariana Grande shines as Glinda while Cynthia Erivo’s high-end notes in the song, ‘Defying Gravity’ is spellbinding. When it comes to the visual appeal, the cinematographer, costume designer and the make-up artist did a great job. Let’s hope the movie delivers as the trailer looks promising.
