Warner Bros. has unveiled the trailer for the highly anticipated film “Joker:Folie a Deux,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in the lead roles. Folie a Deux is a French word for “madness for two” or “shared madness”, it is a rare psychiatric syndrome where two people share the same delusional beliefs.
The sequel is set in the form of a musical. While Joaquin Phoenix will reprise his role as Arthur Fleck, aka Joker, Lady Gaga plays his lady love, Harley Quinn. This is the first time that two remarkable actors are paired together for a film. The cast also includes Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lotte in an important role. The film is scheduled for its theatrical release in October 2024.
Breaking down the Trailer
The trailer begins with the scene where it ended in the previous film. In the trailer, the Joker is shown locked up in the Arkham Asylum. While being dragged by the officials, Joker catches a glimpse of Harley Quinn for the first time, and VOILA! Love blooms. “Let’s get out of here,” whispers Quinn to the Joker in the following scene, and they set out to be freed from jail. The rest of the story follows the escapades of the lovers. The sequel promises to offer double the wildness this time, as the Joker is “not alone anymore.” The film is written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver, while the music is by Hildur Guonadottir.
How Do Fans React?
DC fans could not hold their excitement after watching the trailer and went on to social media to express themselves. As soon as the trailer was out, it went viral on the internet. X(formerly Twitter) was flooded with hundreds of comments. One user wrote,”Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, yes please”. While another wrote,”Joaquin Phoenix is winning another Oscar for this”. Swooning over the last shot, one user wrote that if someone doesn’t win an Oscar for that final shot, that will be the start of his villain journey. What About the Plot?
The first film in the series, titled Joker (2019) depicted the sorrowful journey of Arthur Fleck who is a stand-up comedian and lives with his mother, Penny, in Gotham City. The psychological drama shows him suffering from a neurological disorder that causes him to have uncontrollable laughing fits. The wretched Arthur lives a pitiful life being mocked, beaten and harassed by street urchins and businessmen. Such uncertain events make him sad and depressed, which fosters the rise of the Joker.
The Clown Prince of Crime is back with a bang in the sequel and he is not alone. Joker 2 talks about Arthur’s love story with his demented girlfriend, Harley Quinn as they set out together to ruin Gotham City with their diabolical deeds. As of now, not much is revealed about the plot yet. However, a report by The Wrap says that the story will take place in and around the Gotham Asylum. Another report suggests that the Joker 2 will be “a jukebox musical.” So, who won’t be joining the film? Murray Franklin, played by Robert De Niro, was shot dead in the original film. We won’t be seeing Arthur’s mother, Penny Fleck as she was killed by the Joker as well.
Will We See Batman?
Umm…no! The Dark Knight won’t be appearing in the sequel as this will require the story to fast-forward and skip to the more sinister Joker we all have seen in Batman movies. Joker 2 will focus more on the transformation of the supervillain.
What to Expect?
Joker became one of the standout films in 2019. It received 11 Oscar nominations and won two Oscars for the best actor and best original score. The film was a huge blockbuster hit at the box office as it grossed over $1 billion against a $62.5 million budget.
Joker’s sequel has set even more high expectations among the fans after winning so much appreciation. By the looks of the trailer, Joker 2 seems to be far weirder and scarier than before. Fans are intrigued to see Lady Gaga spilling her magic on the silver screen with her co-star Joaquin Phoenix and together they will excel for sure. At least we expect them to. Don’t we?
